The Moving Timeline We Give Every Customer

8 min read  •  May 21, 2026  •  Moving Tips

Every move feels totally manageable at 8 weeks out and completely chaotic in the last 72 hours. We've watched this happen enough times to know the difference almost always comes down to one thing: a checklist that spreads the work out instead of letting it pile up on the last weekend. This is the actual timeline our office hands people when they book with us, broken into chunks you can realistically follow.

8 Weeks Out: Declutter and Get Quotes

  • Go room by room and sort items into keep, donate, sell, and toss piles — moving less is always cheaper than moving more
  • Request quotes from at least three moving companies and ask each for a written, itemized estimate
  • Start a folder (physical or digital) for moving-related documents and receipts
  • Research your new area if you're relocating to a different city — schools, utilities, DMV requirements

6 Weeks Out: Book Your Mover and Start Using Up the Pantry

  • Confirm your moving date and get it in writing with your chosen mover
  • Start eating down pantry and freezer items so there's less to pack or toss later
  • Order any moving supplies you'll handle yourself — boxes, tape, bubble wrap, permanent markers
  • If moving long distance, research car transportation options if you're not driving your vehicle yourself

4 Weeks Out: Change of Address and Utilities

  • Submit a change of address with USPS, effective on your move date
  • Schedule utility disconnection at your old home and connection at your new one — call ahead, as some providers need 2+ weeks notice
  • Notify banks, subscriptions, and your employer of your new address
  • Begin packing non-essential rooms: guest bedrooms, storage closets, off-season items

2 Weeks Out: Confirm Details and Keep Packing

  • Call your moving company to confirm arrival time, crew size, and any last details
  • Pack everything except what you'll use in the final two weeks
  • Arrange care for kids or pets on moving day so they're not underfoot during loading
  • Set aside valuables and important documents to transport yourself rather than on the truck

Moving Week: Pack the Essentials Bag

Pack a bag with a few days of clothes, toiletries, medications, phone chargers, basic tools, and any paperwork you'll need immediately. Confirm your arrival time window with the moving company one more time, and do a final walkthrough of your old home to check closets, cabinets, and the garage before the truck pulls away.

Moving Day

Be there when the crew pulls up, walk them through the house, and point out anything fragile or awkward before they start loading. Once the truck is packed, do one more lap through every room — closets included — and keep your essentials bag, valuables, and important documents with you instead of on the truck.
